Keeping a blind eye to the technological boom that we are in the midst of is foolish, and sadly that is what many closed-minded individuals are doing. Rather than embracing the benefits that come with the innovations of the 20th century they choose to relish in the “good ole days” when “life was simpler”. What these misunderstood people fail to realize is that the features and benefits that come with these technological innovations far outweigh the “good ole days” way of doing things.

The list can go on for days; take for example the betterment of the environment, safer automobiles, safer travel in general, pharmaceutical advances, and certainly national security. A sampling of recent advances will enlighten even the hardest cynic to the possibility that maybe we are on the right track after all.

Most of us know of at least one person whose life was saved by a pharmaceutical drug. It would be selfish for me to mention how my life has been spared by the advances in this industry so I will let the reader ask themselves one question – “Would (fill in the blank) be alive and have the quality of life they do if it was not for the efforts of the pharmaceutical company to test and improve the medication as it is now?”. The answer should be obvious yet it is not for many.

Advances in small animal ear tag, for example, have cleared the way for companies to improve their research in this life saving arena while at the same time taken into consideration the welfare of the small animals. Automobiles, so many of us simply take them for granted. Many of us remember with fondness the days of gas guzzlers with the roar of the petroleum engine and the exhaust fumes puffing from the exhaust.

Today is a different landscape in the automotive industry and we as a society should be thankful for these advances, yet many hold resentment to the industry as a whole. This is selfish and inconsiderate of what is right for all.

While each individual has the right to hold the opinions that they do, it is imperative as a society to shed the light on what is right, and the technological advances being made in this field of work are astonishing. With safety and the environment at the helm of concern, automakers are ensuring that our roadways and environment will be safer with advances such as V2V (vehicle-to-vehicle) communication to assist avoiding a potential crash.

Look at how many lives are better off with General Motors OnStar system, which was implemented in the mid 1990’s. While resistance is normal, more will be revealed at how better off we as a society will be with these life saving changes.

By embracing the changes as they come and experiencing the features and benefits of technical advances, the underlying fears that drive people to resist these changes will evaporate. The common fear of many is that these advances will take away jobs and lower wages, and while there may be some merit to these views, could it be that we will not need to make as much money and will have more time to spend with family and friends as a result?

Just look at how many people can work from home now. In the end, it is not about our career path or how much money we made, it is about what difference we made in someone else’s life. A positive difference, and technology empowers us to do just that.
